London Square will review the Blackheath Gate name

London Square has said it will review the name Blackheath Gate for the new Leegate development.

After a protest letter was sent by the Lee Green Consortium, representing 15 local community groups, London Square said it would review the comments with its marketing team, and in the meantime will remove the hoarding panel (pictured above) which has already been defaced,

Sean Gavin, Managing Director, South, of London Square, told the Consortium ” London Square recognises the importance of local heritage and identity, and we value constructive engagement with the community.”

  1. I think Blackheath Gate is actually the stronger choice from a regeneration point of view. The Leegate name has been associated with decades of decline, and keeping it risks carrying that negative perception into a development that’s meant to reset and uplift the whole area. Using Blackheath, which is a recognised and well-regarded landmark, would help attract investment, new businesses, and footfall, ultimately benefiting both Lee and Blackheath. If we want the site to succeed long term, giving it a fresh identity makes far more sense than tying it to the old one.

    1. There is already a Blackheath Gate in Greenwich – which is on the edge of Blackheath.

This will be extremely confusing for anyone new to the area and resented by those who already live in, and value, Lee.
