The tree planted by the Lee Manor Society in Manor House Gardens in memory of the former Chairman Ralph White is no more. Friends and colleagues gathered barely a month ago for the formal unveiling of the tree and accompanying plaque.
It appears the top branch of the tree had been completely broken off, possibly a result of vandalism. Please let us know if you saw anything over the last couple of days. Despite regular watering by members of the Lee Manor Society, the tree (an Alder) had also been suffering in the extreme heat.
The Society will replace Ralph’s tree in the autumn, probably in a position where it is less likely to be damaged by people playing football.
It is a timely reminder to Lee residents to water young trees during the very hot weather, especially those planted in the street. Please check any near you. You can use a hose to water them as they are exempt from the Thames Water hosepipe ban.

I am very sad to see what happened to Ralph’s tree, but I’m not surprised.
Please be sure to select a much more protected location for its replacement in the cooler weather.
To protect the replacement sapling in honour of Ralph it would be better to place two additional sturdy stakes in the ground to give added protection.
This should be enough to deter most vandals from repeating their antisocial act .
